This guide covers
The Hermit and the nested task
A Sinful Soul. The quest is part of Blacksmith Radovan's path in
Wedding Crashers. It is the last quest on that route, after
The Blacksmith's Son and
The Jaunt.
Talk to Radovan
After
The Jaunt, report to Radovan in
Tachov. He sends you after the lost cart's fate is clear.
Learn about Ambrose the hermit
Radovan needs rare steel for the wedding sword. He points you to Ambrose, a hermit in
Apollonia who owns an old blade of true Toledo steel. Rumours say Ambrose dealt with the devil and villagers have seen apparitions.
He tells you to go to
Troskowitz and ask Betty in the tavern for gossip and Ambrose's exact location.
You can play the investigation straight, or use a shortcut. Shortcut: To skip the rumor hunt, go straight to the blade stash in Ambrose's shack. You lose story context and extra rewards. If you shortcut, jump ahead to Ambrose's real identity (Konrad) for the map and flow. The quest still continues a long while after that.
Travel to Troskowitz
Speak with Betty at the Troskowitz tavern. She is guarded but says four armed strangers resembling monks also asked after the hermit.
Betty gives Ambrose's location once pressed. She also names two witnesses: Gerda and Stanislav. Visiting both unlocks extra dialogue when you confront the hermit. Bring a shovel.
Talk to Betty until all apparition topics are exhausted. Check both witnesses. You can also chat with German merchant Jurg Thomel or Bailiff Thrush for mostly flavour.
Gerda
Gerda is the apothecary's wife in Troskowitz. Pass a Speech check to learn where she saw a "hellish creature" near a cross west of town, or pay her 12 Groschen.
She sends you to the conciliatory cross at
Troskowitz West Shrine. Dig the grave. Two wolves may attack.
Inside you find Groschen, papers, a waffenrock, and a Crusader cloak: proof the "apparition" was a disguise. Read the document and book for lore and XP.
Stanislav
The shepherd lives east of the
Troskowitz Cemetery interesting site. He can also start
Carrot on a Stick. Convince him with Groschen, Speech, or alcohol such as
Moonshine or
Saviour Schnapps.
He describes a demon on a black horse riding toward Apollonia.
Inspect his tip at the
Abandoned Camp (Apollonia) interesting site: two shacks (one burned), black horse behind a fence. Examine the horse properly (zoom and inspect) to show it is ordinary, not supernatural.
That site has strong loot (including around 181 Groschen); see the Interesting Sites checklist entry for details.
With cross and horse debunked, Ambrose is almost certainly no sorcerer. Go meet him.
Ambrose's real identity (Konrad)
The hermit lives in the rocks of Apollonia. Follow the winding cliff path that at first looks like it drops but actually climbs toward his spot.
Confronting him costs reputation immediately. Use evidence from the cross to crack his story. Pick every option to press him until he breaks.
He admits he is Konrad, a Knight of the Cross with the Red Star. The real Ambrose died years ago; Konrad took his name to flee Prague politics and honour Ambrose's last wishes.
Complete task: A Sinful Soul
If you want to get the sword from Konrad, you will need to quickly finish the
A Sinful Soul task.
Konrad says the sword is not in the hut but in Ambrose's grave. He will give the location if you settle Ambrose's unfinished business. He hands you Ambrose's Cross for Margaret, a widow on the east side of Troskowitz.
Deliver the cross with the line: "Ambrose forgives you, but his brother must get what is rightfully his." Escort her to the Troskowitz graveyard. She explains Ambrose's brother Jan was buried in unholy ground as a suicide though it was accidental.
Find Jan's remains outside the cemetery wall. Walk to the marker until you see a bright red rose bush to pick. Dig, then rebury him in the consecrated grave beside Margaret.
Margaret pays 45 Groschen.
A Sinful Soul completes. Return to Konrad for the rest of The Hermit.
Final decision: knights vs Konrad
Back at Konrad he is already fighting Arn and fellow knights; Konrad shot first. They accuse him of murdering their Grand Master.
Side with the knights: Kill Konrad or let them arrest him. You must find the sword yourself. Search the hut's upper floor: the journal behind three movable sacks notes where the blade is buried.
Side with Konrad (best ending): If you did the cross and horse investigations, you can hear Konrad's claim that the Grand Master was a traitor. Help him fight the three knights. He then tells you the grave location and parts on good terms; Henry swears to keep his secret. The knights drop solid loot worth several hundred Groschen.
Recovering the Toledo blade
The sword is not in the hut. It is buried at the head of a grave just north of the hut, among bushes in the field east of Trosky Castle: far west side of the big search circle, upper half. Digging Ambrose's own grave has no payoff.
With the rare blade secured, head back toward
Tachov to forge it.
Final forging and rewards
Radovan insists you forge the finished sword. Clear the smithing minigame for the
Hermit's Sword recipe.
Hand the sword to Radovan for 85 Groschen. He agrees to attend the wedding; speak with him again to move
Wedding Crashers forward.
Optional: Tell Gerda the truth about the cross apparition without exposing Konrad's name. She rewards
On Composition of Alchemy II.
Rewards summary
- 85 Groschen from Radovan for delivering the forged sword.
- Skill book: Gerda, after you explain the cross illusion without breaking Konrad's secret.
- Wedding Crashers: Radovan is ready for the Semine wedding.
Before the wedding, we recommend also doing Miller
Materia Prima and the rest of Kreyzl's route if you are pursuing that storyline too. See our blacksmithing guide for forging basics.
The Hermit FAQ

Do I need A Sinful Soul for the sword?
Yes. Konrad ties the grave location to finishing Margaret's task chain.
What if I side with the knights?
Loot the hut journal behind the sacks to learn the blade's grave without Konrad's help.
Where is the Toledo blade buried?
North of the hermit hut at a grave in the open field east of Trosky Castle, in the western part of the marked search area.
How much does Radovan pay for the forged sword?
