This guide is a complete and comprehensive blacksmithing tutorial with all possible recipes. The game introduces blacksmithing during
The Blacksmith's Son side quest started at Radovan at
Tachov. Radovan teaches you the basics, which will count toward the Craftsmanship skill tree.
All smithing recipes and sketch locations are tracked in the KCD2 Blacksmithing checklist.
Forges
Blacksmithing can only be done at a forge. Once Radovan teaches you the basics, you will be able to use any forge in the game to your needs.
- Interact with the anvil at a forge to start the mini-game.
- Most forges have a resident blacksmith who buys your work and sells ore, scrap and specialist materials.
- No forge is "better" than another for quality - pick whichever is convenient.
- You can return to
Tachov early on for a familiar setup and Radovan as a buyer.
Blacksmithing sketches and materials
Start smithing by picking a recipe from the Blacksmithing book. You must read each Blacksmithing Sketch before you can forge that item yourself. Radovan provides starter sketches for a hunting sword, axe and horseshoes during
The Blacksmith's Son. Find or buy the rest as you explore; track them in the blacksmithing checklist. There are 47 sketches total in KCD2 across axes, short swords, long swords and horseshoes.
Each design lists required inputs. Metal Scraps and Toledo Steel are only examples - not every recipe uses them, and higher-tier pieces often need rarer ingredients from specialist vendors or loot.
You cannot forge maces, crossbows or other non-listed weapon types - only the four categories above.
Blacksmithing process
Interact with an anvil at any forge to begin the blacksmithing mini-game.
Step-by-step
- Choose sketch - pick the item you are forging.
- Heat in the forge - use the bellows; read heat from glow colour (dull red through orange toward yellow/white).
- Do not overheat - when the billet hits white, pull it out right away.
- Hammer on the anvil - shape the metal until edges look even (see hammering section below).
- Re-heat if needed - if time runs out, the game sends you back to heating.
- Quench - Henry finishes in water when the shape is valid.
- Result - inspect for quality tier and sell value.
Leaving metal too long in white-hot territory ruins the heat phase. Watch the colour and remove promptly when you hit white. If hammering time expires, you repeat the heating step - not a fail, just an extra loop. Better hits save you extra rounds.
How to make really good weapons and nail the hammering
Forging an item for a skilled player can take around two minutes. The most crucial skill is consistent, heavy hammer blows.
A strong hit: press and hold so Henry swings with maximum force; listen for a deep clank; watch for yellow sparks (more is better). Good hits raise final quality and use stamina efficiently.
Start slow and mindful until the feel is automatic, then speed up.
Chain good hits in tight timing to build a rhythm. After several clean strikes Henry whistles; match that tempo and continue.
Cover the whole surface of the workpiece. Distorted edges smoothing out means you are advancing. Examples:
- Swords - long bar, often heated in several zones along the blade.
- Horseshoes - small but the U shape is tricky until you learn the angles.
- Axes - broader head; move strikes across the whole profile.
How to craft as efficiently as possible
This section is for completionists and achievement hunters who want to finish sessions faster with fewer wasted actions.
How to smith as efficiently as possible
The tutorial sometimes suggests turning the metal around. That does not change quality or progress. Skip unnecessary rotations and instead nudge your aim so consecutive strikes land on different spots - you cover the surface faster.
Helpful gear and potion to smith faster
Brew or buy
Quickfinger Potion before long forging sessions:
- Weak - +2 Craftsmanship, 20 minutes
- Normal - +4 Craftsmanship, 20 minutes
- Strong - +6 Craftsmanship, 60 minutes
- Henry's - +8 Craftsmanship, 60 minutes
Wear the Leather Apron (+3 Craftsmanship, free in Radovan's forge sleeping room after
The Blacksmith's Son) and Leather Gloves (+2). Stack with
Quickfinger Potion for faster, cleaner swings.
Craftsmanship, buffs and character level for blacksmithing
Craftsmanship is the skill tree tied to manual work in KCD2.
- Blacksmithing - forging at the anvil.
- Repairing & sharpening - field maintenance of gear.
- General manual tasks tied to the same progression.
What improves results: Craftsmanship level (faster swings, higher tiers), your execution in the mini-game (heavy hits, rhythm, full surface), and temporary buffs such as
Quickfinger Potion, apron and gloves.
Your overall main character level does not change crafted weapon stats or gate recipes by itself. Focus Craftsmanship for forge planning.
The top forge tier is Martin Quality, unlocked at Craftsmanship level 16.
The Blacksmith's Son quest walkthrough
This side quest is on Blacksmith Radovan's path to the Semine wedding (
Wedding Crashers). It introduces
Tachov, Radovan and the forge mini-game. Next up is
The Jaunt.
- Talk to Radovan at his forge in Tachov.
- Complete the tutorial: hunting sword, then axe, then horseshoes.
- Optional: forge extras and sell them to Radovan for practice and coin.
- Use the new bed & save in the forge building.
- Loot / equip the Leather Apron (+3 Craftsmanship) from Henry's room.
- Return to Radovan and ask for work to start
The Jaunt.
After the quest you keep access to Radovan's forge as a buyer; all other forges still work for crafting. For grinding all 47 sketches, stack apron, gloves and
Quickfinger Potion.
