5 Hardest Items to Get Necessary for 100%

Trying to achieve 100% Completion is a complicated feat. While many items simply lie on the ground, a few others require a complicated route, often taking north of 30 minutes.

Note: All 5 items in this list are necessary for 100% Completion, which is also necessary in Steel Soul mode, to reach All achievements and Platinum trophy. Use our 100% Completion checklist to track progress.

Far Fields area in Hollow Knight: Silksong - An important area containing multiple collectibles including Mask Fragments, Memory Lockets, and other items necessary for 100% Completion. This area is home to various NPCs and quests essential for game completion.

1. Crest of the Witch

If you're striving for All achievements, this questline means not only the need for cure. You also need to defeat Grand Mother Silk - while bearing the parasite.

Quest Steps

Start with Greyroot in Shellwood. Complete their first quest by gathering 6 Pollip fruits.

Greyroot in Shellwood - The NPC who provides the questline for Crest of the Witch. Start by completing their first quest gathering 6 Pollip fruits, then later collect Twisted Bud from Bilewater to continue the infection questline.

Later in the game, collect Twisted Bud from Bilewater and bring it to Greyroot. Complete the Wish: Rite of Rebirth and find yourself infected.

If you wish, now is the time to defeat Grand Mother Silk while infected, earning the Twisted Child achievement.

Run to Yarnaby in western Greymoor tower, accept his Wish: Infestation Operation, pay 160 Rosaries to Crull and Benjin for their Steel Spines and let yourself be cured, earning the Crest of the Witch.

Important: This Crest is necessary for 100% Completion, although we do not recommend using it for any achievement runs.

This is also a good opportunity to pick up Crest of the Reaper, just nearby.

Related Achievement: Twisted Child - Defeat Grand Mother Silk while infected with the parasite.

2. Throwing Rings

Probably the last new Red Tool you'll get, Throwing Rings are a very strong and fast Tool, which should be a serious consideration for any build, especially Architect's Crest users.

Throwing Rings are a reward from Shakra, after completing her Wish: A Trail's End.

How to Unlock

The prerequisite is meeting and talking to Shakra in every area, then collecting and buying every map. A wish then appears in Bellhart.

Trail's End leads you deep into eastern Bilewater, to an area only accessible during this quest. At the end, a heart-breaking cutscene awaits, with Shakra's Throwing Rings.

Related Achievement: Trail's End - Complete Shakra's final quest.

3. Mask Shard #20 in Brightvein

One of the most missable areas, Brightvein is a hidden vertical ice cave deep in Mount Fay. Brightvein is only accessible during ACT 3 and needs Silk Soar ability to access.

Brightvein hidden ice cave in Mount Fay - A secret vertical ice cave accessible only in ACT 3 with Silk Soar ability. Contains Mask Shard #20, one of the most missable items in the game, requiring Clawline parkour skills.

The only clue about Brightvein you ever get is a small dialogue hint after beating Pinstress on Mount Fay.

Brightvein itself is pretty difficult, requiring Clawlining off flying ice bugs and parkouring up an ice cube challenge.

Final Mask Shard: The reward is probably the last Mask Shard you'll find in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Check our 100% Completion checklist for All Mask Fragments.

4. Pale Oil #3 from Flea Mini-games

The journey to final Needle upgrade, necessary for 100% Completion of Silksong, takes the whole game.

Complete Questline

  • Find all 30 Fleas in the game. Use our All Fleas checklist
  • Move Flea Caravan to Putrified Ducts
  • Reach ACT 3
  • Get a Wish: Ecstasy of the End in Bellhart
  • Reach the Fleas in Fleatopia and begin the Flea Festival
  • You have to beat Top Score in all Flea Mini-Games - Flea Dodge, Flea Bounce and Flea Juggle

Fleas then join the celebration with a pi-ata full of Rosaries and 1 Pale Oil.

This is a good time to pick up Mister Mushroom's quest in the area.

We recommend upgrading the Needle straight away, but this time, Pinmaster Pinley won't be home. Instead, help him in western Shellwood, which rewards you with the final upgrade - the Pale Needle.

Pinmaster Pinley and Needle upgrades - The NPC responsible for upgrading your Needle throughout the game. Located in Bellhart initially, but can be found in western Shellwood in ACT 3 to obtain the final Pale Needle upgrade.

5. Sylphsong and Eva Binding

Sylphsong ability, which restores your Silk while sitting on Bench, is a necessary item for 100% Completion.

Sylphsong ability unlocked - The powerful ability that provides infinite Silk regeneration while sitting on Benches. Obtained by binding Eva after reaching 32 unlocked Tool slots across all Crests, making it one of the hardest items to obtain for 100% Completion.

Getting Sylphsong is only possible late-game - for most players, it will be in ACT 3. You need to fully upgrade at Eva's to achieve Binding, which grants the Ability.

Requirements

This is only possible if you have 32 unlocked and usable slots in your Crests. In other words, you need to have at least 6 Crests and used at least 17 Memory Lockets to unlock tool slots in them.

In ACT 2, only 6 Crests are available. And the game only contains 20 Memory Lockets in total, which makes this ability the hardest to get. Use our Memory Lockets checklist to track your progress.

Summary

All five items listed are necessary for 100% Completion (use our 100% Completion checklist), but are entirely optional for the main story.

If we were to include the hardest items to obtain in-game, the Everbloom, 4 Old Hearts and 11 different Mementos would be the most difficult. Check out our All Mementos checklist to track these challenging collectibles.
