This main quest starts right after
Wedding Crashers, following the Godwin interlude. You and Sir Hans wake up in
Trosky Castle jail.
Henry is eventually released to work off a debt. Hans is sentenced to hang for poaching.
The quest is tracked on the
For Whom the Bell Tolls main quest row.
This is a timed quest. You have 12 in-game hours to save Hans.
Henry comments every time the bell tolls. If it rings for the twelfth time before you reach the finale, Hans is executed and you get a Game Over.
Do the first tasks
To save Hans, you need Captain Thomas to vouch for his nobility. Thomas is wounded and feverish in the Maiden Tower chapel.
As a prisoner you have no gear and limited movement. You must complete jobs to open new areas of the castle.
You start with nothing. No inventory, no horse. Help NPCs and gather lockpicks and tools to move forward.
Hauling sacks
Your first job is to move three charcoal sacks from the wagon to the shed up the hill.
Pick up a sack, follow the path past the guarded gate, and drop it in the dark coal shed. It is a long walk.
On the way you will see Vuytek talking to Magda. You can intervene or ignore it. It does not change the main quest outcome. We recommend intervening after the second sack so you can hear their full dialogue while hauling. After the third sack they stop being interactive.
Blacksmithing and the inner bailey
After the sacks, talk to Blacksmith Osina near the shed. You need castle access, which you do not have yet.
Ask him for more work, then suggest blacksmithing. He asks you to forge a horseshoe for Kabat. That gives you legal access to the inner bailey.
After this talk, the guards blocking the courtyard step aside.
Go to the forge in the courtyard. Take the Farmer's Horseshoes Sketch and Scrap Metal from the chest.
Heat the metal until it glows white or red, then hammer until Henry confirms it is done. See our blacksmithing guide for consistent results.
Near the supply chest, find a small red jar. Loot it for a lockpick, coal, and 3 Groschen.
Deliver the horseshoe to Osina, then bring it to Kabat in the stables. You can ask for a reward. He refuses.
Get lockpicks and allies
You will need to open chests or pickpocket NPCs. Your money was confiscated, so you need other ways to get lockpicks.
Kabat's rosary
Keep talking to Kabat in the stables. He has lockpicks but wants his rosary die back from Father Nicodemus after losing it in a game of farkle.
Find Nicodemus on the ramparts. You can buy the die or win it in a game, but both need 20 Groschen and you probably have none.
The cleanest option is to wait until he stands up, then quickly pickpocket the turquoise rosary. Return it to Kabat for 3 lockpicks.
You can also punch Nicodemus until he falls, but only when no guard is nearby. He carries strong loot with the die, including 60 Groschen, which helps a lot in this quest and can be your first cash.
Fanka's chest
Find Fanka near the forge. She needs a chest opened in the kitchen.
Offer to help. You get easy access to the kitchen and the Chamberlain. You can now eat from the kitchen.
The gallows
Talk to Kolda at the gallows. He wants you to sharpen his axe.
A perfect run on the sharpening wheel earns reputation. The chest with Kolda's axe also holds 2 Groschen.
Kolda mentions a rumor about jumping into the courtyard well to reach the chapel. That is risky and can injure you.
Speak to Votava for information
On the outer rampart, Convict Votava leans against the shed. Talking to him gives a small reputation boost and useful tips about lockpicks and moving around the castle.
Give Dietrich some food
In the kitchen upstairs, a hungry guard waits for food that never arrives.
Give him food from your supplies for a small reputation boost.
Help the Chamberlain and get to the towers
Chamberlain Ulrich is the key to legal access to the towers. He suffers from stomach pain in the noble kitchen.
If your Scholarship or Speech is high enough, you can try to diagnose him. Pass Survival, Scholarship, or Speech checks to pin down stomach ulcers.
Say you have no equipment to make the cure. He grants access to the Crone Tower to brew a
Digestive Potion for his pain.
Even if you fail the check, you can still sneak into the tower.
You can ask for the Maiden Tower too. He denies it for now.
Brew the Fever Tonic for Ulrich
Climb to the top of the Crone Tower to find the alchemy room and meet Katherine.
Use dialogue options to pressure her. Speech is the easiest path, and Henry can threaten to report her to the chamberlain.
Loot the chest and prepare to brew.
Find Physician's Journal on the table and read it. That adds the
Fever Tonic recipe. Brew it for Ulrich.
Follow these steps:
- Pour wine into the cauldron.
- Add 3 handfuls of Feverfew and boil for 2 turns.
- Grind Elderberry leaves in the mortar and add them.
- Add 2 handfuls of Ginger.
- Use the still to distill the potion into a phial.
If you are also doing
Opus Magnum, visit Scribe Erazim in the Crone Tower a few floors below the alchemy room.
Bring the
Fever Tonic to Ulrich. You only need to give him one bottle. Save the other phial for Thomas.
After that, he finally grants access to the Maiden Tower.
Heal Captain Thomas
To save Hans, deliver
Fever Tonic to Thomas in the Maiden Tower.
From Ulrich's room, go up every staircase you can find toward the top of the Maiden Tower.
If you have chamberlain permission, walk in openly. If not, sneak past the guard (a rock distraction works).
Give the medicine to Adela to trigger the cutscene. Go up the wooden stairs to reach Adela and Thomas. Convince her you can help.
If you have the tonic, a cutscene plays.
Rewards
Once Thomas recovers, he interrupts the execution. Lord von Bergow returns and stops the hanging.
You then meet Bergow.
For the best reputation in the next audience, choose the most diplomatic answers:
- “There's nothing else the Chamberlain could have done.”
- “We all have our share of the guilt.”
- “Betrayal is a strong word.”
You receive better clothes and the next main quest,
Back in the Saddle, which sends you toward Nebakov Fortress.
