Silksong's Final Patch is Live: The Sea of Sorrow Expansion is Officially Next

Team Cherry confirms last weekend's update was the final bridge to Pharloom Bay.

The quiet period for Hollow Knight: Silksong fans is officially over. Developers recently confirmed that the technical update pushed to players last weekend was the final "base game" patch. This move clears the runway for the Sea of Sorrow expansion arriving within weeks or months.

While Team Cherry remains characteristically tight-lipped about the exact release date, the mechanical foundation is now set. We've combed through the confirmed facts, map leaks, and lore snippets to outline exactly what to expect when the gates to Pharloom's coast finally swing open.

Patch notes and technical work on the original Hollow Knight also shipped alongside Silksong DLC messaging; the same news cycle framed this as the last bridge before expansion content.

Returning to the Cut Content: Pharloom Bay

For those who followed Silksong's development since 2019, the name Pharloom Bay carries a lot of weight. Originally a cut area from the 2022 build, this saltwater region is finally being restored.

Located southeast of Bilewater, the Bay is expected to bring a stark visual shift to the game. Map leaks suggest a "metallic and iron" theme dominated by saltwater hot springs. It's a glimpse into the past: this is likely how the murky Bilewater looked before the Citadel's influence took hold.

Deep within this region lies Snail Village, a small laketown built on platforms. We expect this to serve as the expansion's hub, featuring a masked NPC in a massive snail shell who likely acts as a new merchant or "Wish-giver."

The Plasmium Lab

If the base game was about Silk (and Soul, and Void), Sea of Sorrow shifts the focus toward Plasmium. Lore buffs will remember Alchemist Zylotol mentioning that Plasmium was first discovered "hidden deep in salt-stricken waters."

The expansion's centerpiece appears to be the Plasmium Lab. Early sketches from the ACMI exhibition in Australia show a circular structure built on a hill, designed to interact with surface lightning. Inside, expect a high-tech, high-danger environment filled with:

  • Large-scale Lifeblood Butterflies
  • Electrical hazards
  • Bosses mutated by "life-draining influence"

Preparing for the Difficulty Spike

History tells us that Team Cherry doesn't make easy DLC. Just as The Grimm Troupe pushed the original Hollow Knight to its limits, Sea of Sorrow is expected to be significantly harder than the Silksong base game.

The good news? You won't need a new save file. You can carry over your current Hornet, but you'll want to be fully geared. From what we've deciphered in our massive Sea of Sorrow guide, this is our realistic wishlist:

  1. New Tools and Weapons: Over 10 new items to help manage the difficulty.
  2. A New Crest: Theorized to be linked to the "Master of Zango," potentially unlocking Plasmium-specific skills.
  3. Nautical Horrors: Get ready to fight crustacean-themed bosses, ranging from armored crabs to predatory octopuses. Hopefully.

Where Will the Entrance Be?

Since the patch last weekend was confirmed to be the last, some players likely are already "parking" their characters near potential entrance points. If you want to be first through the door, keep an eye on these three locations:

Weavenest Murglin

The Lore Tablet here explicitly mentions "salt and stone," and the water at the end of the room is unusually clear.

Pale Lake

As the largest body of water in Pharloom, it's the most logical geographic connection to a coastal expansion.

Trail's End

This late-game area already features the metallic, cubical rock aesthetic seen in the Sea of Sorrow teasers.
