Master Schindel's Toys is a small task in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 that is strictly tied to the main quest Into the Underworld. This is an extremely missable activity, even if you know it exists.
The task involves recovering stolen scholarly items for Johann Schindel, who was recently robbed by Goatskin.
You can only start this while you are still searching for Goatskin in Kuttenberg and before he is fully found. Otherwise the bathhouse setup stops being offered.
Starting the task
You can initiate this task only while you are hunting Goatskin during Into the Underworld and only before he is actually found. Otherwise the quest givers stop offering it.
Best approach: Progress Into the Underworld until you reach the bathhouse. Then, in this exact order:
- Find bathhouse owner Beata and exhaust all of her dialogue so Set a trap appears in your journal.
- Only then speak with bathhouse owner Adam and ask him “What do you need to ‘sort out’?” That starts Master Schindel's Toys.
Then continue with the Into the Underworld guide: set the trap, follow Udo, and confront Goatskin. If this task is active, Goatskin gains an extra line: “Where are Schindel's things?”
Find the underground map
Goatskin does not carry the items, but he marks the
Kuttenberg Gallows interesting site on your map. Travel there at once and look for a stone building. Enter the side door to reach a staircase.
Go to the upper floor to find Angel's body. Loot the Map of Kuttenberg Underground from the corpse and read it in your inventory so the stash marks on your map. He also carries a gold badge. The bottom floor has a sack with an engraved gemstone ring and 33 Groschen.
Map of the Kuttenberg Underground:
Enter the tunnels
The game gives little direction, but the toys show on the Kuttenberg Underground map as a circle on the right, near a goat head. You need to reach that mark.
Several entrances exist, including one near the south gate and others in shop basements.
Spend as little time underground as you can; the tunnels are dark and easy to get lost in. We recommend heading to northeastern Kuttenberg, to the spot below.
The area is fenced, but a gate opens on the eastern side from a narrow street. Enter the barn on the north side of the fenced area and use the wooden ladder underground.
This matches the Kuttenberg Underground map: it is the northeastern-most entrance and the shortest run to the objective.
Inside Kuttenberg underground
Follow the video for the exact path, or use the text steps below.
Descend two ladders and follow the main path. Early rooms are small alcoves; at the first fork, go left.
Continue straight until you reach a ladder down. In the wooden section, go left. At the end you will see a barrel on the ground beside a rock.
Open the barrel to recover the stolen scholarly goods, including an astrolabe and Livre du ciel et du monde.
Return the stolen items
To exit fast, backtrack, then after the first ladder go left. Open the very easy door lock and leave the cellar. This building houses Master Schindel. If it is night, wait until morning.
You will find Master Schindel at the Scribe's office just north of the Kuttenberg market.
Return the items for 225 Groschen. He also gives Strange Little Verse I, which starts a hunt for more verses hidden around the city.
You can then continue Into the Underworld and meet Samuel if you have not already.
Master Schindel's Toys FAQ
Do you need Beata before Adam?
Yes. Full Beata dialogue first, then Adam's “sort out” line, or the task may not start.
Can you finish this after the Goatskin shortcut?
