This guide covers two quests at the Sedletz cemetery that pair naturally because they share the same location.
Beyond the Grave is a task from Rat at the Hole in the Wall: recover a deceased mine owner's personal seal from the Sedletz crypt.
Thou art but dust… begins when you ask Brother Morticius about the seal. Follow the route below to finish both in one sweep. Start with Beyond the Grave; the side quest appears when you talk to Morticius.
Start the first quest
Speak with Rat at the Hole in the Wall after completing
Feast for the Poor and the preceding guild tasks (including
The Thieves' Code). She sends you to Sedletz Monastery northeast of Kuttenberg to rob a grave.
Step 1: The Sedletz cemetery
Enter the monastery cemetery and find the small chapel. The map marks the area, and a narrow gap in the fence leads in.
Start the second quest
Talk to Brother Morticius in the graveyard before you use the trap door. He offers Thou art but dust…, the ossuary cleanup, which you should run alongside Beyond the Grave.
Morticius wants the ossuary tidied: stack skulls and bones into orderly piles. Over three hundred individual pieces move quickly because you grab them in bulk.
Enter the crypt
Focus on Rat's job next. In the center of the chapel floor is a trap door. If you have not accepted Thou art but dust… from Morticius, you cannot open it.
Use the trap door. A short cutscene plays: Henry falls through, and Morticius tosses down a torch.
Step 1: Bottom level of the crypt
Stay calm in the dark. The lower maze is roughly a square loop. Four corner chambers anchor the layout, and you spawn in one corner.
If you turn right out of the spawn doorway, then go left, then left, then left, you circle back to the start. Two corners hold large coffin rooms.
That layout matters for loot routes and for scooping bones, covered below. First, advance Rat's objective.
Find the hidden wall
In one corner, a brick wall bears a small cross. Move close and interact: it is a secret panel.
The tomb is picked clean aside from empty brandy bottles. The monastery gravedigger appears to have beaten you to the relic.
Step 2: Tidy up the crypt (lower level)
Before you surface to confront the gravedigger, work the ossuary. Backtracking out the long way wastes time, so clear the lower floor in one pass.
Loot loose bones from the ground and from the bone patches (see below). Not every bone model is interactable, but valid piles share a recognizable look.
Carry everything up to the main chamber and stack pyramids on the marked pads.
Sweep the entire lower loop before you climb out. Typical totals down there:
- 11 cracked skulls
- 9 human skulls
- 88 thigh bones
When the lower floor is clear, leave through the wooden partition inside one of the coffin rooms.
The tunnel dumps you outside near the graveyard.
Finish Thou art but dust… on the main floor
Before you deal with the gravedigger, close out Morticius' thread. Talk to him for easy-to-miss dialogue about what you saw underground, including monk remains.
Step through to the main ossuary level and keep collecting bones. New goals appear:
- Strip the wooden shelves.
- Clear designated bone heaps on the floor. Those interactions skip waiting.
If you gathered every remain and built the pyramids, you may still hold 4 cracked skulls. That is fine: completing the quest only requires the pyramid arrangement.
Step 3: Where is Morticius?
Thou art but dust… shifts outside: Brother Morticius has vanished.
Speak with nearby Gravedigger Lenek. He reveals Morticius has been dead for a long time.
Lenek inspects the ossuary, stunned by the order you restored. The side quest ends and he awards Craftsmanship XP.
Step 4: Steal the seal for Rat
Return to Beyond the Grave. With the tomb empty, Lenek is the lead suspect. Find him in the cemetery or at his cottage just north of the monastery.
Gravedigger Lenek's house
While Lenek is away by day, you can scout. He lives alone with a dog. The house holds basic supplies and a few potions. The barn carries blacksmithing materials, nothing exotic.
Lenek deflects questions about the seal. He does not stash it in a chest; he keeps it on his body at all times.
Steal the seal
Stealth is the smoothest approach.
- Street pickpocket: Between about 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM he often walks alone from the graveyard toward his house. Pickpocket or knock him down and loot.
- Night infiltration: Sneak into his home after dark and lift the seal while he sleeps. The front door is Very Hard locked at night (open by day), so bring lockpicks and a Quickfinger potion if needed.
- Direct force: With weak stealth, knock him out (or use a permanent solution) and loot the seal from his body.
Conclusion and rewards
Bring the seal back to the Hole in the Wall. Rat pays 225 Groschen and grants Agility XP.
Finishing Beyond the Grave is required for the next theft job,
The German's Treasure. Ask Rat for more work to start it immediately (walkthrough: The German's Treasure guide).
Sedletz cemetery FAQ
Do I need The Thieves' Code finished?
Rat only offers Beyond the Grave after the earlier Hole in the Wall tasks. See
The Thieves' Code (full walkthrough: The Thieves' Code guide).
Can I skip Morticius?
Skipping him locks the trap door. Accept Thou art but dust… first if you want the dual clear.
Does Lenek turn hostile?
Plan stealth or crowd control. A dog patrols his yard, so patience and timing help.
Best time to pickpocket Lenek?
The evening walk between cemetery and house is a reliable solo window.
